Link Building with Backlink Analysis Tool

Anyone involved with organic search engine optimization knows the value of linking or connectivity and how it contributes to higher search engine placement.

This blog does well on some competitive phrases in part, due to links. For example, a quick check on Marketleap's Link Popularity tool shows 90,927 links to Online Marketing blog.

The start of those links was the result of competitive research. Finding out where similar sites received links and gaining links from the most relevant sources over time can generate the necessary link popularity to start gaining momentum. Once a site gains content and link momentum, the increased awareness makes it easier to gain new links.

To gain linking momentum efficiently it's most effective to use tools. One very promising tool that was released recently by Aaron Wall is the Backlink Analysis tool. This is a client side software tool (you need to download it) that you can use to quickly identify not only all the backlinks of your competitors, but also many other useful attributes of those links. This information is invaluable to effectively determine which links to go after. This tool is in it's first stages, so I guess you could call it a beta. But its feature set compares to other tools like Optilink which cost a few hundred dollars. This tool is FREE.

An effective link building program focuses on gaining links that might naturally happen, just more strategically and at a slightly faster rate. Tools like the Backlink Analysis tool can give you the information you need to link smarter. Long term, the best linking strategy is through useful and sometimes controversial content. But to get started, this tool is a valuable addition to any SEO's link building tool set.

Get the full breakdown at Aaron's site, SEO Book. For an excellent article on link building, be sure to visit Todd Mailcoat's recent post on the topic at his Stuntdubl blog.

Keep your friends close, your enemies closer

There's a humorous meme regarding an interaction between Google's founders, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, Engineer Matt Cutts and a few blackhat SEOs at the Google Dance a few weeks ago.

It starts with a post by Duncan at the Blog Herald making the complaint that something fishy is going on. Matt Cutts posts a very interesting reply on his blog. The complaint was that Google was mingling with people who openly spam Google. As if a spammer would gain some benefit from that? Google is smarter than that and you can read Matt's post about it just to be sure:

"I was just as surprised as my (2 blackhat, 1 whitehat) visitors to see Larry and Sergey come down the stairwell at 1am. But I always want Larry and Sergey to take webspam seriously, so when they came over to say hello, it was fine with me to prod DaveN into telling stories. If only I’d known how much more useful info I’d get! Forget the “SEOs have alcohol, I have a soda” technique: from now on, I’m bringing a cardboard cutout of Sergey when I talk to SEOs. I just need a tape player that says “Uh huh, tell me more about what you do” and I’ll just sit back and take notes."I've always noticed blackhat and search engine conference speakers mingling in the past as well as blackhat SEO's being invited to MSN's search champs.

Barry mentioned to me when he took a tour of Yahoo during SES San Jose, it was mostly blackhat SEOs that were invited. At first I really wondered why this would be, an then that old adage comes to mind: keep your friends close, but keep your enemies closer.

If you work in SEO, SEM or any aspect of Internet marketing, this is a highly regarded conference that I can honestly recommend as one of the best for tactical knowledge of search marketing.

Mamma.com Copernic Deal Alive Again

Using a combination of cash and stock, Mamma.com announced yesterday they've signed a letter of intent to acquire Copernic, maker of desktop search and related tools. There was a little Mamma drama regarding the attempt to acquire Copernic earlier this year involving some SEC investigation of Mamma.com.

However, according to Martin Bouchard, executive chairman of Copernic:

"Based on further due diligence, we are now confident that Mamma.com is a strong and very well managed company," he said. "We are positive about closing this transaction which will create a new organization capable of competing with the best of breed in the search engine sector of the Internet."

Adding Copernic would be a boost to the mix of services offered by Mamma.com including Mamma Media Solutions and Digital Arrow.

Online Marketing Blog Ranks 182 in Feedster's Top 500 Blogs

The blog search engine, Feedster published their list of the top 500 blogs for August and I'm happy to say that Online Marketing Blog weighs in at 182. That's higher than Google Blog (213) and Yahoo Search Blog (197)! Amazing.

Rankings for other blogs I read include:

IT Conversations #26

Om Malik's Broadband Blog #52

Micro Persuasion #56

Seth's Blog #70

Scobleizer #74

Jeremy Zawodny #103

gapingvoid #106

Dave Sifry #136

John Battelle #139

Blog Herald #157

WebmasterWorld #164

Robin Good #167

Yahoo Search Blog #197

Chris Pirillo #202

Darren Rowse Problogger #203

Jakob Nielsen's Useit #237

Adrants #254

MarketingVOX #347

Ensight Jeremy Wright #348

InsideGoogle #436

Search Engine Roundtable #500 (this one really should be much, much higher)

There are LOTS of other blogs that I read, 40-50 that were not in the list, probably because they were not indexed by Feedster or some other glitch. Danny's not too happy about that.

Google Guy Blog? Matt Cutts

There's been speculation for a while in the SEO community that Matt Cutts is the "googleguy" that provides the voice for Google in WebmasterWorld and Search Engine Watch forums. If he's not "googleguy" he's certainly "Google's Guy" as he is the consumate PR professional when answering questions about all things Google.

Matt Cutts has now started a blog. Using WordPress no less. Where's Blogger? Actually, his rationale for using WordPress makes sense and I agree. That's why in the next 30 days this blog will move to a top level domain and use another blog CMS. I contacted Blogger support and they cannot offer any type of redirection, so I'll need to leave this blog and just start up at another address. Redirection will have to be done at the page level.

In the meantime, I will definitely be watching Matt's blog for the SEO and Google information he's so good at providing.

Huge hat tip to SEO, Aaron Wall. Looks like he may be interviewing Matt soon.
